
SPARTANBURG, SC — Betty C. Walters, 78, passed away at her home on April 29, 2010 after a prolonged illness. Ms. Walters was born on June 29, 1931 to the late Mearl and Golda Clifford. She married the late Richard V. Walters July 3, 1948.
Ms. Walters, along with her husband, founded Walters & Company, Inc. in Spartanburg, a real estate and construction business. Ms. Walters was named Business Woman of the Year by the American Business Women’s Association in 1977. She later moved to Florida and started her own business, Trend Supply Company. Apart from enjoying a successful business career, Ms. Walters was a true Patriot, devout Christian, a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, loved working in her yard and cherished her Yorkies, Butchie, Benny, and Dolly.

Spartanburg – Ida Voncile Cornwell, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010.
Born January 17, 1927 in Garland, AL, Mrs. Cornwell was a daughter of the late Palmer and Mary Lindsey Brantley. She attended Auburn University where in 1950 she met her beloved husband, Dr. Julian Carr Cornwell. They married in December of 1951. Mrs. Cornwell was a member of First Baptist Church, Columbia, SC.

Spartanburg – Louis M. Alberta, age 69, beloved husband of Nancy Grace Cantera Alberta, died Sunday, April 25, 2010.
Born, June 28, 1940 in Camden, NJ, Mr. Alberta was a son of the late Leonard and Margaret Lauria Alberta. Mr. Alberta was a past Grand Knight with Knights of Columbus; Mary Queen of Peace Council 9575, past Senior Vice President of VFW Post #9539, past President of Fellowship Committee of Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, past Commandant Semper Fidelis Detachment, M.C.L. #204, President, H.O.A., The Gardens at Timm Creek; member of American Legion Post #33; Leading Knight, Deptford Elks Lodge #2708; and Assistant Scoutmaster, Boy Scouts of America, Troop 62. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam. Mr. Alberta was retired from Progress Lighting in Philadelphia, PA after 39 years of service and was currently employed with Food Lion in Roebuck. He was a member of Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church.
Spartanburg – Robert Hoyt Strother, age 84, husband of the late Irma R. Strother, died April 12, 2010 at Summit Hills.
Mr. Strother was born on April 1, 1926 in Tallassee, AL to the late Issiah Durham and Corrie Lee Elliott Strother. He devoted 30 years of his life teaching high school English in the LaGrange and West Point, GA area, served in the United States Navy and was a World War II Veteran. Mr. Stother was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Roebuck, SC – Betty Williams Stepp, wife of the late Joel D. Stepp, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2010 after several years of declining health.
Mrs. Stepp was a daughter of the late R. Vernon and Emmie Thomas Williams. She was a graduate of Limestone College and received her Masters of Education Degree from the University of South Carolina. She retired from School District Six after 32 years of service.

Roebuck, SC – Elizabeth “Lib” Petrie Christian, age 73, died Monday, April 12, 2010 at Magnolia Manor of Inman.
Lib was a daughter of the late Lamar Lawson and Gertrude Earline Arms Petrie. She was a 1955 graduate of Roebuck High School and was employed with Community Cash for 21 years and worked in the District 7 School Cafeterias.
She is survived by her step-children; Calvin L. Christian, his wife Susan and their daughter Elizabeth of Roebuck, SC, Gene Christian of Asheville, NC and Tracie Patton of Rutherfordton, NC and her adopted children; Chassidy Brown of Rutherfordton, NC and Lee Christian of Asheville, NC.

Spartanburg – Sandra Dianne Ray McCray, age 65, died Friday, April 09, 2010.
Born in Spartanburg on February 15, 1945, she was the daughter of Mildred Braziel McCray and the late William Thurman Ray. Sandra was a graduate of St. Andrews High School in Charleston, SC. She resided in Florence, SC for many years where she was employed with Florence General Hospital. Sandra was an avid Miami Dolphins fan, enjoyed reading and writing children’s short stories and shagging to beach music. She attended Westside Baptist Church.

Spartanburg – Ruby Marguerite Watkins Welch, age 97, joined the Church Triumphant, Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at RoseCrest Skilled Nursing facility.
Spartanburg, S.C. – Carolyn Elizabeth Dunker Lidman, age 72, passed away April 1, 2010.
Ms. Lidman is survived by a son and his wife, Wayne and Kerri Lidman of Smyrna, GA and a sister, Mary Ruth Dunker of Spartanburg.
