Glenda Floyd Smart (August 10, 1938 – June 27, 2009)

Spartanburg – Glenda Floyd Smart, beloved wife of William Earl Smart, died suddenly on Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Born in Mullens, SC on August 10, 1938, she was the daughter of Ernestine Harralson Floyd of Smyrna, GA and the late Kenneth Floyd. Devoted to her family and a close circle of friends, she was blessed with a full life. She was active in the Arts Council of Spartanburg County having served as president on two terms. Mrs. Smart was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church.

Robert Lee Slone, Jr. (February 26, 1923 – June 26, 2009)

Spartanburg – Robert Lee Slone, Jr. age 86, died Friday morning, June 26, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home.

Born in Prestonsburg, KY, February 26, 1923, Mr. Slone was a son of the late Robert L. and Grace Haywood Slone, Sr. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin and was manager of Plant Engineering for American Motors Corp. Mr. Slone served in the United States Army serving in World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Slone was a life member of Free and Accepted Masons and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.

Rev. Michael J. Polewczak (December 30, 1946 – June 23, 2009)

Spartanburg – The Reverend Michael John Polewczak was born on December 30, 1946 in Newark, NJ. He is the son of John J. Polewczak of Cross, SC, and the late Mary Ancmon. In addition to his father, he is survived by two sisters, Catherine Ann Griffin and Barbara Elizabeth Root, both of Cross, SC, and two brothers, James A. Polewczak of Northumberland, NY and John W. Polewczak of Grover Beach, CA.

James B. Lancaster, Sr. (February 10, 1938 – June 20, 2009)

Spartanburg – James B. Lancaster, Sr. age 71, died Saturday morning, June 20, 2009.

Born in Woodruff, February 10, 1938, Mr. Lancaster was a son of the late Jim and Minie Waddell Lancaster. He was the owner of Lancaster Tree Service and Lancaster Garbage Service. Mr. Lancaster attended Living Water Community Church.

Mr. Lancaster is survived by his beloved wife, Faye W. Lancaster; two sons, James Billy Lancaster Jr. of Reidville, and Tim Lancaster (Betty) of Woodruff; a step-daughter, Wanda Abernathy of Spartanburg; three step-sons, Sam Webb of Cowpens, Jacky Webb of Boiling Springs and Carroll Webb of Whitney; three brothers, Wilson , Ray, and Wayne Lancaster; three sisters, Mary Jennings, Brenda Fleming, and Renee Jeter; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lynn Mathis.

Edith Suttles Arnold (February 23, 1928 – June 9, 2009)

Spartanburg – Edith Suttles Arnold, 81, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009.

A native of Spartanburg, Mrs. Arnold was born February 23, 1928. She was a daughter of the late Andy and Cora Donahue Suttles. She was retired from Mayfair Mills and a member of Roebuck Church of God.

In addition to her husband, DeWitt Arnold, Sr. of 67 years, Mrs. Arnold is survived by a son, DeWitt Arnold, Jr. (Janice) of Spartanburg; a brother, Paul Suttles of Lyman; and a sister, Rometta Gentry of Arcadia; thirteen grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Jimmy and Walter Arnold.

Ethel Irene Leisure (November 15, 1941 – June 18, 2006)

Ethel Irene Leisure, 67, of Moore, SC, passed away in the arms of her husband June 18th at 9:27am in her home.

Born November 15, 1941 in Weston, Ohio, Mrs. Leisure was the daughter of Robert Earl and Cora Iona Whitney. She was retired from Allied Signal in Fostoria, OH and BIC Corporation in Duncan, SC. Mrs. Leisure was a homemaker with hobbies including golf, yard sales, Bunco, flea markets, camping, and boating. She was a member of Reidville Road United Methodist Church.

Harriet Cecil Sims Chesney (March 22, 1917 – June 16, 2009)

Spartanburg, SC – Harriet Cecil Sims Chesney passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, June 16, 2009 at Regional Hospice Home.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, on March 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Phillip Schuyler and Abigail White Cecil. Mrs. Chesney was married to the late Nathan A. Sims and the late Morris B. Chesney. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School where she was voted Most Athletic. Mrs. Chesney was well known for her culinary skills and flower arranging. She shared these gifts generously with many organizations to which she was a member including PEO, Historical Society, Heart Association Board, and Questers. Mrs. Chesney was a founding member of The Debutant Club of Spartanburg. She was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg where she was selflessly dedicated to serving her Lord and the church in many areas.

Bobbie Jean Lancaster (December 23, 1934 – June 14, 2009)

Spartanburg – Bobbie Jean Mitchell Lancaster, wife of the late Mortimer Sams Lancaster, passed away peacefully, Sunday, June 14, 2009, at her home.

Born in Winnsboro, SC, on December 23, 1934, Mrs. Lancaster was the daughter of the late E. L. Mitchell and Willie Mae Murphy and John R. Beckham. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. Her joy, in addition to her family, was caring for others in their time of need. Mrs. Lancaster was a member of Croft Baptist Church for 47 years and a member of the Ruth Figueroa Sunday School class.

Jeffrey Scott Erwin (August 7, 1968 – June 10, 2009)

Roebuck – Jeffery Scott Erwin, age 40, died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center,
June 10, 2009.

Scott was born in Spartanburg on August 7, 1968 to John Joe Erwin, Jr. and Linda Nichols Liming. He attended Dorman High School, was a certified welder, enjoyed fishing and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by a daughter, Christina Darlene Phillips of Pacolet, SC, his grandmother Eula Faye Erwin of Converse, SC and a granddaughter, Addison Shae Phillips. He was predeceased by a brother, Jody Liming.

Scott, Dianne Smith (August 2, 1933-May 15, 2009)

Spartanburg, SC – Dianne Smith Scott passed away peacefully, Friday evening, May 15, 2009.

Born in Kingston, PA, on August 2, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Altheda Watkins Smith. Dianne was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, PA. She later attended Southern Seminary, Buena Vista, VA. Dianne studied voice in New York and sang in Broadway choruses, doing understudy parts to Doretta Morrow in “Kismet” and later Barbara Cook in “The Music Man.” Her repertoire included thirteen operas, countless show tunes, and secular music. She performed for Metropolitan Auditions, Carnegie Hall Saturday Morning Concerts, and Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians. Dianne also performed in concerts for the Opus Society of Florida Philharmonic, Ziegfeld Girls of Florida and the Music Study Club of Boca Raton.
